Simply stated, your agenda is our agenda. We’re not looking for “the placement” – we’re looking to develop a long-term, successful relationship that brings you value over the course of your career. We recognize that actuaries chose to pursue actuarial careers for many different reasons, perhaps:

  • Some may want to challenge their mathematical abilities in a business function with significant impact on a company’s bottom line
  • Some may want to do critical research and/or teach the next generation
  • Some may pursue an actuarial career as a means to a broader business end – to move into a corporate finance, marketing, investment, risk management, or operations role, or to ultimately run an organization
  • Some (we’ve been told) simply were encouraged to sit for an exam because they were smart enough to probably pass it!

None of the above statements, however, matters. When we contact our candidates, they frequently tell us, “Wow, you’ve taken really good notes about me.” It’s true – we ask lots of questions to better understand you and better pinpoint the kind of opportunity that’s worth bringing to your attention. We’re not into the “please, please, please send me your resume” approach (so we can send it who knows where…).

Candidates further appreciate that we take the time to call them on the phone, not spam them, and not just present an opportunity but discuss why – based on our understanding of you from previous communications – we feel there could be value for you to explore it. Our due diligence process allows us to address the “tangibles” (here’s where the Job Description comes in):

  1. location
  2. title
  3. department
  4. duties and responsibilities
  5. organization
  6. career growth

More importantly, address the “intangibles” (never found on the Job Description, rarely seen in Human Resources, generally only available from the actual person making the hire or one further step up from his/her boss):

  1. company/departmental culture – this is often THE key that determines whether or not the opportunity is right for you
  2. boss’ management style – is this the right person to accelerate my professional and personal growth and career opportunity?
  3. level of credibility and influence of boss/department – who you’re “connected to” can open doors just by virtue of association
  4. expertise and backgrounds of peer group – what’s the team really look like?
  5. how you could really differentiate yourself in the team
  6. what the boss is really looking for and why

Also, our depth of organizational knowledge and relationships with influential staff allow us to “create” opportunities for candidates – opportunities that have not (and often would not have) been posted or put out to search because our client didn’t know the value you bring or that they could actually get you!
